These coins are important epigraphic documents as they give us ( in IA ) the earliest dated use of naskhi script in al-Andalus. A then singular use that was not to reappear in coinage until nearly three decades later.

‘Ali ibn Yusuf with heir Sir 522.533 / 1128-1139

Habba or
1/16 Quirat*.
0.0506gr 5mm
B-Cd9
Numisma 233, pg 56, n67, this coin.

This tiny coin/ weight with both the name ‘Ali and Sir can obviously be dated between 522 and 533. See two other habbas in the anonymous coins of this dynasty and one in the silver of Muhammad ibn Sa’d in the Almoravid Taifas. These few weights are about all the material metrological evidence we have for habbas of the Almoravid period.

Vives’s numismatic Quirat, the actual coin, was arbitrarily defined by him at a theoretical weight of 1gr and it is his definition we use numismaticaly. Nevertheless in classical Islamic metrology the Quirat is equal to three habbas (closer to the 1/8 Quirat of Vives).

The epigraphy of this coin is somewhat barbarous, but the coin is of the same die as the one registered by Vives- compare with the rubbing in his volume of plates. The epigraphy certainly contrasts with the dinar of the same mint of the year before.

Thafra? (Zafra ?)
0.92 13mm
IV Jarique,
pg 209, nº 47,
this coin.

This Quirat is anonymous so its tenuous association with Ibn Malik is only founded on the stylistic similarities of the IIA and the nominal recognition of the ’Abbasids. On the other hand the “’ain” at the bottom of the IIA may relate it to Muhammad ibn ’Ali of Badajoz who also nominally recognised the ’Abbasids in his coins ( Vives 1914 ,1987 & 1988 )
The mint name is very problematic as the arabic name for present day Zafra does not appear in the Arabic chronicles.

Abu Fadl ’Iyad 541- 543 / 1146- 1148 – أبو الفضل إياض

’Iyad was reconfirmed by the Almohads as Qadi of Sabta in 541, as a strict Sunni Maliki he could not at heart but view the Almohads as heterodox and participated in an unsuccessful revolt against them in 543. These Quirats were probably struck during the short period of feigned allegiance to the Almohads.

Almoravid style Christian coinage – Alfonso VII. 520-552 / 1126-1157

This ruler occupied Baeza from 452 to 551 ( 1147 to 1156) and very rare coins of the dates 545,546 & 548 are known.

Vives ( nº 1992 to 1995) had read the mint on these coins , with doubt, as the triple mint of Bayasa, Djayan, Ishbiliya ( ¿ Baeza, Jaén, Sevilla?). A very improbable strike as in this period the first was Christian held while the other two were in Muslim hands. This interpretation has since confused many and lead to some fanciful historical rationalisations. Long before Vives, the correct reading had been given by A.Delgado in his now century and a half old unpublished work. These coins also explain the reference to albayasí coins in Christian documents.

Alfonso VIII 553-611 / 1158-1214

This ruler struck in Toledo, for more than thirty years, Almoravid type coins with the Catholic credo written in Arabic. These coins affirm the Trinitarian doctrine, the Pope as Imam and Alfonso as amir. In small decorative details they imitate the coins struck in Murcia by Muhammad ibn Sa’d in. The coins are dated by the Safar calendar, a dating which starts 38 years before the Christian era and commemorates the complete submission of the Peninsula to Roman authority. This, incidentally, may indicate that the 6th century innovation, the Christian calendar, had up to then made slow progress in the medieval Christian states of the Iberian peninsula. The documents and contracts of the period were also dated in the Safar calendar.
